Breakfast Topic: What will you miss most from the Wrath era?WoW.joystiq.com/media/2010/09/zachtlahtsiretsolution1.jpg” />

This Breakfast Topic has been brought to you by WoW.joystiq.com/2010/02/03/the-new-WoW-com-guest-blogger-program/”>Seed, the Aol guest writer program that WoW.joystiq.com/tag/write-for-WoW-insider”>brings your words to WoW Insider’s pages.

I have to admit (although somewhat shamefacedly) that the only raid instance I saw before Wrath launched was Karazhan. Even worse, I was only watching my roommate running around this fantastic place, slaying beasts and praying (yes, he was actually praying) for the purples to come his way. At the time, I had abandoned my first toon, a level 23 orc warrior, and I had made amazing strides leveling my holy paladin to the grand status of level 61 before taking a break. As a result, I never raided when there were massive 40-man raids or when raiding was “hard,” as those BC/vanilla veterans will say, so I can’t say that I’ll miss some of those raids that might disappear as Cataclysm reshapes the world as we know it. As for the zones getting hit hardest by Cataclysm, I can truthfully say I’m quite fond of bidding most of them farewell. Will anyone other than die-hard Chuck Norris fans really miss The Barrens?

So what is it about WoW that I will miss when the game changes for Cataclysm? It’s the fast-paced content, the extreme value of a global cooldown. Many players stress at the thought of tanks getting killed in two to three hits from a raid boss, while I thrive on the risk. During our initial attempts at Festergut, the challenge of being able to time a ridiculously strong Holy Light in between swings from the abomination to keep the tanks alive was exhilarating. As a ret paladin in PVP, I love being jumped by a rogue in a battleground. If he couldn’t kill me during his initial stun, I’d probably burst him down to nothing during mine. With the dramatically increase health pools and lower comparative healing/damage planned for Cataclysm, there won’t be as many hair-trigger reactions needed to stay alive. I’m pretty sure I’m going to miss the current model, in which a single GCD no longer means life or death for someone in my raid.

When Cataclysm hits, most players will miss a specific zone or instance. What do you think you’ll miss? A particular ability or general function? Or are you among those who think change is good, that paladins shouldn’t have bubble/hearth and it’s OK if mages can bloodlust?

Spiritual Guidance: Welcome to Cataclysm heroics, shadow priests

Spiritual Guidance: Welcome to Cataclysm heroics, shadow priestsWoW.joystiq.com/media/2010/09/likewhoa.jpg” />
Welcome to the Wednesday edition of WoW.joystiq.com/category/spiritual-guidance “>Spiritual Guidance, where your host WoW.joystiq.com/bloggers/fox-van-allen”>Fox Van Allen takes on the darker, shadowy side of priesting. While your holy columnist Dawn Moore was busy trying to plant suggestions regarding the alleged superiority of healing, Fox was busy casting WoWhead.com/spell=605″>Mind Control to demonstrate the superiority of the shadows.

Right now, on the live Wrath servers, shadow priesting seems to fit like a glove. That’s not necessarily a result of our class and mechanics being perfect — they’re not. It’s a result of their feeling familiar. We’ve been playing under the rules of patch 3.3 for nearly a year now and it feels natural; it feels right. We’re blessed with strong damage and near unlimited mana — provided we put in the effort to know how to make both of those a reality.

It’s hard to accept that 4.0.1 is bringing such major changes, especially in the realm of that once unlimited mana bar. It’s gone, and it’s not coming back any time soon. If you need any evidence, consider this: WoW.joystiq.com/2010/09/22/spiritual-guidance-has-mana-regen-become-collateral-damage-in-p/”>After slashing mana regen to the bone last week, Blizzard followed up by cutting regen even more this week in the latest beta build. (For something called a “nerf,” these cuts sure hit like a Mack truck, don’t they?)

These changes to regen may make the 80-to-85 leveling process more tedious, but they don’t necessarily make it more difficult. If the pinch is going to be felt anywhere, it’s going to be in 5-man instances, heroics and raids. Since raids aren’t quite available yet, I decided to queue up for some heroics instead to get as much Cataclysm endgame flavor as I could.

Can our mana bars handle the stress? How weird and different are our new rotations? And how can shadow priests add much-needed value to a party above and beyond the standard DPS abilities in Cataclysm? The answers to those questions — plus a stunning 47,306 damage crit — are all after the break.

Flexible raid locks in patch 4.0.1

Flexible raid locks in patch 4.0.1WoW.joystiq.com/media/2010/06/ulduar1.jpg” />

In WoW.joystiq.com/tag/patch-4.0.1/”>patch 4.0.1, Blizzard will roll out a new “flexible raid lock” system in Icecrown Citadel and The Ruby Sanctum. This system has a few major changes in it, outlined below:

  • You are no longer locked to the raid upon zoning in, but to a specific boss kill.
  • You are no longer locked to a specific raid size or group.
  • Heroics have greater restrictions placed on them.
  • All Wrath raids will use this system once Cataclysm releases.
  • All Cataclysm raids will use this system.
  • This only applies to raids and not to normal or heroic dungeons.

The full Blizzard statement after the break.

Breakfast Topic: What would you tell your level 1 self?

Breakfast Topic: What would you tell your level 1 self?WoW.joystiq.com/media/2010/09/backtothefuture1.jpg” alt=”" />

We were all once level 1 and new to WoW. Some of us migrated from a different MMO, while for others, WoW was their first MMO. Some of us started during vanilla WoW, some came in during The Burning Crusade and some started after Wrath went live. No matter when you first started WoW, you were a level 1 with no money or gear — and if this was your first time playing an MMO, you more than likely had no idea what to do.

Fast-forward to level 80 and look at your character now. Are you raiding Icecrown on heroic? Maybe you’re one of the gladiators in your battlegroup. How about a Seeker/Loremaster? Did you picture yourself doing the things you’re doing today? Did you have a goal from Day One? I myself started with a gnome rogue. The thought of something so small popping out of the shadows was both funny and awesome. I rolled a hunter a week later, and the race to 70 was on. I hardly knew anything about the game at the time. I just knew that I wanted to hit 70 because that is what all the cool players were doing.

In Dragonblight, there is a quest where you meet the WoWhead.com/npc=27899″>Future You at the Bronze Dragonshrine. The Future You helps you battle the WoWwiki.com/Infinite_dragonflight”>Infinite Dragonflight and makes a few comments about your gear and how you fight during the encounter. Would you ask the Future You for any tips on your adventure to 80? What advice would you give yourself? I would tell myself that he doesn’t know it yet, but one day he will be a great seeker, a hunter who not only loves his ale but his pets. Most importantly, I would tell him he will be a hero of the Alliance one day and to train hard, for he will face the Lich King.

What if at level 1 you met the future version of yourself? What if you could visit yourself in the past? What would you tell the level 1 you, or what would the level 1 you ask?

PTR build 13033: Restoration shaman update

by Kris on Sep.24, 2010, under PvP, PvP Bible, WarcraftFormula, WoW, WotLK Secrets, wotlk guide

 PTR build 13033: Restoration shaman updateWoW.com/media/2010/02/sham.jpg” />
Another PTR build is on the way with WoW.joystiq.com/tag/Build-13033/”>patch 13033. With it, there are several tweaks and changes all over the place. Earlier today, we heard about the WoW.joystiq.com/2010/09/24/the-care-and-feeding-of-warriors-heroics-protection-spec-and-b/”>changes warriors are receiving in the patch — but what about restoration shaman?

We only get one change this time around, but it is a big one. Back in WoW.joystiq.com/2010/09/18/cataclysm-beta-restoration-shaman-changes-in-build-12984/”>build 12984, WoWhead.com/spell=16190″>Mana Tide Totem was changed from adding back a percentage of your base mana to increasing your spirit by 200 percent for the totem’s duration. This was a fairly significant change that mirrors the shift from MP5 to spirit. It placed the ability firmly in the camp of healers only, and instead of giving us a flat amount back, it increased our mana regeneration based on whatever it was at the time of casting.

The cooldown remained at 5 minutes, which was a bit long, considering the effect. In the latest PTR build, though, the cooldown is being reduced to 3 minutes. This change should also be applied to the Cataclysm beta pretty soon, as well. This is a fantastic change and one that will make us that much stronger in the months to come. An average boss fight right now in Wrath lasts roughly around the 5-minute mark, meaning that you can only use this cooldown once per fight in most cases. After 4.0.1 drops, though, you will be able to use it more than once per boss fight. Pretty sweet deal, if you ask me.

Also consider that in the Cataclysm beta, healer mana is at a premium. Every heal has a right and wrong place, and we consume mana so much more quickly than we have previously. This change allows us to use a very important regeneration cooldown much more often, and so we can keep healing for longer. This will give us a distinct advantage early in the upcoming expansion. Anything that gives us mana back is a good thing. Things that give it back to us faster are even better.

Officers’ Quarters: Patch 4.0.1 — An officer’s perspective

by Kris on Sep.20, 2010, under PvP, PvP Bible, WarcraftFormula, WoW, WotLK Secrets, wotlk guide

WoWhead.com/blog=164291″> Officers Quarters: Patch 4.0.1 An officers perspectiveWoW.joystiq.com/media/2010/09/new-guild-ui-2-treated.jpg” />

Every Monday, Scott Andrews contributes WoW.joystiq.com/category/officers-quarters/”>Officers’ Quarters, a column about the ins and outs of guild leadership. He is the author of The Guild Leader’s Handbook, available now from No Starch Press.

Most major game patches have a significant impact on guild officers, and in the past I’ve tried to give an officers’ perspective on how the changes to the game will affect the decisions and plans that we make moving forward. Unlike WoW.joystiq.com/2009/11/09/officers-quarters-patch-3-3-an-officers-perspective/”>previous WoW.joystiq.com/2009/06/22/officers-quarters-patch-3-2-an-officers-perspective/”>patch-WoW.joystiq.com/2007/10/01/officers-quarters-2-3-an-officers-perspective/”>perspective columns, however, a reader actually requested this one.

Hey Scott,

I’m a guild leader for a rather small 10-man raiding guild, and I got to thinking today about the upcoming pre-Cata patch that’s going to change everything. See, Wrath was the first expansion of WoW that I, and many members of my guild, were ever really active in (a lot of us swapped over from another MMO, together), so I was wondering — once the pre-Cata patch hits, should we continue raiding? From the grumblings I’ve been hearing on the PTR, numbers are all out of whack, and with some of the class changes coming, I was wondering if it’d even be a good idea to keep raiding once 4.0.1 hits. I’ve never experienced the “conversion” from one expansion to another on the raiding front, so I really have no idea what to expect as far as people’s attitudes (not just guildies, but possible PUGs, too). In the other games I’d played, an expansion just meant new zones, storyline, etc., but WoW’s expansion features a level cap increase, and in this case, a major overhaul in how we play.

Lichborne: Death knight beta diaries, part 4: Two-handed frost and other beta minutae

Lichborne: Death knight beta diaries, part 4: Two handed frost and other beta minutaeWoW.com/media/2010/09/danielwdkrimeaura.jpg” />

Welcome to WoW.com/category/death-knight-lichborne/”>Lichborne, your weekly source for news, guides, tips and opinions on the death knight class.

In the latest beta patch, Blizzard was so kind as to bump the level cap up to 85, in addition to opening Uldum and Twilight Highlands, the last two major leveling zones in the expansion. Unfortunately, neither zone is itemized, but more on that later. In my testing this past week, I’ve delved in the long-dead, dormant spec of two-handed frost. The spec was officially killed off (at least in the sense of having competitive DPS) in the latter part of Wrath, when Blizzard decided to make frost the official spec of dual wielding. However, with the advent of Cataclysm, that is changing. With blood becoming a dedicated tanking tree, it left unholy as the only two-handed weapon tree. Recognizing that some players might dislike the pet-tending aspect of unholy, Blizzard decided to support two-handed weaponry in the frost tree once again.

That said, deciding to support it and succeeding at it are two different things, and in addition, there seems to be a lot of people who are still confused as to whether or not Blizzard plans to support it. You can put your mind at ease now though. Very recently, WoW.com/blues#ghostcrawler”>Ghostcrawler (lead systems designer) confirmed that, yes, Blizzard is supporting the two-handed weapon playstyle for the frost tree.

Breakfast Topic: Are you dodging the Cataclysm beta?

by Kris on Sep.09, 2010, under PvP, PvP Bible, WarcraftFormula, WoW, WotLK Secrets, wotlk guide

Breakfast Topic: Are you dodging the Cataclysm beta?WoW.com/media/2010/05/goblintrio.jpg” alt=”" />

This Breakfast Topic has been brought to you by WoW.com/2010/02/03/the-new-WoW-com-guest-blogger-program/”>Seed, the Aol guest writer program that WoW.com/tag/write-for-WoW-dot-com”>brings your words to WoW.com.

I could have taken part in the Cataclysm beta, but I chose not too. Here are my Top 10 reasons why I decided to wait to play Cataclysm until it is released some time later this year:

  1. I only have so much time — might as well put it toward making my toons stronger.
  2. I’ll let other people work the kinks out.
  3. I get bored enough repeating quests as it is. Why do the quests when they don’t really count?
  4. I don’t want to get accustomed to playing a level 85 mage, only to have to go back to my level 80 mage.
  5. Why level (or for that matter, play) with a character you can’t bring into the “real” non-beta world? I’m not that ambitious.
  6. I’ve done the beta before: fallen in love (well, strong “like”) with certain spells or abilities, only to have them taken away. (Mirror Image so rocked when it first appeared in the Wrath beta …) I don’t want to experience that pain again.
  7. Most of my guildmates won’t be there. I like having my guild around.
  8. I actually don’t think I’m a skilled enough raider to be any help with my feedback. I really need to do a boss encounter four or five times before I start to get it down well.
  9. If I am going to risk wife aggro, I want to risk it for something that counts.
  10. I’m not a fan of spoilers. I’d rather experience it all when it goes live.

Are you playing in the Cataclysm beta? Why or why not? Would you, if you had the chance?

Breakfast Topic: What enemy would you turn traitor to join?

by Kris on Sep.09, 2010, under PvP, PvP Bible, WarcraftFormula, WoW, WotLK Secrets, wotlk guide

Breakfast Topic: What enemy would you turn traitor to join?WoW.com/media/2010/09/defiasrenegade1.jpg” alt=”" />

This Breakfast Topic has been brought to you by WoW.com/2010/02/03/the-new-WoW-com-guest-blogger-program/”>Seed, the Aol guest writer program that WoW.com/tag/write-for-WoW-dot-com”>brings your words to WoW.com.

World of Warcraft puts players on a relatively fixed path in terms of loyalties. Sure, there are some very deliberate exceptions to this — notably the WoWwiki.com/Aldor”>Aldor/WoWwiki.com/Scryer”>Scryer rivalry of The Burning Crusade and the WoWwiki.com/Oracles”>Oracles/WoWwiki.com/Frenzyheart”>Frenzyheart feud in Wrath — but in general, wherever a conflict arises in the game, the decision as to what side you’re going to take is made for you. The rogue trainer in Northshire might tease you with the idea that joining the WoWwiki.com/Defias”>Defias is a potential option for you, but in reality, that can never happen.

WoW is certainly not lacking for “evil” factions one could potentially sympathize with. The aforementioned Defias, whose whole issue stems basically from WoW.com/2008/05/22/know-your-lore-the-defias-brotherhood/”>getting screwed over by Onyxia’s meddling, stand out as one such faction. Illidan Stormrage WoW.com/2008/01/11/is-illidan-bad-or-simply-misunderstood/”>has long sparked controversy as to whether he was really on the side of evil, although that might be a result of WoWwiki.com/Illidan_Stormrage”>his almost hopelessly confused lore. I have read suggestions that WoWwiki.com/Malygos”>Malygos has a large (if misguided) sympathetic following. And even now, I see some already looking to figure out how to take the side of Big Bad Yet to Come, WoWwiki.com/Deathwing”>Deathwing himself.

Does this bother you? Do you wish sometimes that you could break the rules and side with a faction or villain you’re not supposed to? What hostile faction or enemy character, if any, would you side with, given the opportunity to do so?

Every Wednesday, WoW.com/bloggers/chase-christian/”>Chase Christian of WoW.com/category/encrypted-text/”>Encrypted Text invites you to enter the world of shadows, as we explore the secrets and mechanics of the rogue class. This week, we discuss the new glyph system and talk about which glyphs look good so far.

Back in the day, before Wrath was even released, I had incorrectly speculated that there would be three tiers of glyphs in the expansion. It was WoW.com/2008/09/24/encrypted-text-rogue-glyphs-2nd-edition/”>my very first post on WoW.com, and my mistake was clearly pointed out to me by some of the helpful commenters. It turns out that I was actually right — it just took Blizzard a few years to get around to adding the extra tier of glyphs.

There are now three types of glyph: prime, major and minor. Prime glyphs aren’t necessarily fun; they just buff us. Major glyphs are sort of the utility glyphs that give us a measurable benefit, but they’re not necessarily mandatory. Minor glyphs are just for fun things that make our lives easier. Luckily for us, many of the new Cataclysm glyphs are available on the beta, complete with WoW.com/2010/09/03/cataclysm-beta-the-new-glyph-ui/”>the shiny new glyph interface. While scribes may be complaining about their business models going out the window, I’m busy drooling over some of the new glyph options we have available.
