The Art of War(craft): Must-have PvP talents for shaman in 4.0.3

Gah. A few more days left, and we’re only on shaman. This can’t be good. Let’s get right to it, then. Shaman are incredibly fun to play, especially with the changes that came with WoW.joystiq.com/tag/patch-4.0.1/”>4.0.1. The improvements on the totem interface in the past have made it much easier for shaman to manage their totems. The best shaman utilize their totems in the heat of battle, and one interesting skill to master is knowing not just which totem to put down for a situation but which sets of totems, now that shaman can drop it down all at once. It’s a convenience that changes a few things. There is also higher survivability, better mobility, and clearly defined playstyles for all three specs.

World of Warcraft Mobile Armory Updated for 4.0.3
by Kris on Nov.19, 2010, under PvP, PvP Bible, WarcraftFormula, WoW, WotLK Secrets, wotlk guide

Heads up, iPhone users, the World of Warcraft Mobile Armory has been updated to reflect the changes in patch 4.0.3. This is a quick news brief just to let you know, in case you haven’t gotten any notices about it yet.
The only major changes — albeit pretty important for your character — are that talents and glyphs now reflect their current state as of yesterday’s (or today’s in Europe) release of patch 4.0.3.
You can grab the updated World of Warcraft Mobile Armory here.
The Art of War(craft): Must-have PvP talents for mages in 4.0.1

The Cataclysm is getting close, so we’ve only got a few weeks of this transitional stage, but it’s important to pick out our PvP talents heading into the expansion. Today, we’re going to take a look at mages, who have the usual set of tools and a couple of new ones. Nothing drastic has changed, despite the overhaul in WoW.joystiq.com/tag/patch-4.0.1/”>4.0.1, so mages are still casters who do best at range. Nothing has made them capable of wading into melee and standing toe-to-toe with rogues or anything silly like that. Instead, what we’ve got are three interesting trees with slightly different ways to crush their opponents — all of them fun.

The Art of War(craft): The shape of Cataclysm battlegrounds PvP
by Kris on Sep.25, 2010, under PvP, PvP Bible, WarcraftFormula, WoW, WotLK Secrets, wotlk guide
Zach loves all things PvP, which is why Fight Quest is the only thing he watches on television. Well, that and Glee, which contains absolutely no PvP whatsoever. Except maybe if you consider Rachel Berry and newcomer Sunshine Corazon’s rivalry some form of WoW.joystiq.com/category/the-art-of-war-craft/”>The Art of WarCraft. I mean, it could be.
I was supposed to go into detail with keybindings using an addon this week, but we’ll put that on hold for now. We can always revisit keybindings another time, but so much has happened on the beta that it would just be wrong not to take a look at what’s going on. By now, many of the abilities are pretty set, and with WoW.joystiq.com/2010/09/13/rumor-cataclysm-targeted-for-a-november-2nd-release-date/”>a rumored November release on the horizon — an idea that’s got some meat behind it now that the background downloader is WoW.joystiq.com/2010/09/16/patch-4-0-1-now-available-on-background-downloader/”>working on a hefty 4 GB worth of 4.0.1 goodness — it looks like what we see is what we’ll get. The numbers will probably be tweaked up or down on some spells and talents, but for the most part, I think we’ve got a pretty solid feel for how the game will play.
The new game mechanics will take some getting used to for some classes such as warlocks, who become a cooldown class, and paladins, who now manage a secondary resource. Players have all of the pre-Cataclysm and the grind to level 85 to get a good feel for things, and that should be plenty of time. But never mind the new abilities — those are fun, for sure — but there’s an entire support system for World of Warcraft PvP that raises the bar in a way we’ve never experienced. New battlegrounds, a standardized currency on par with the PvE system, guild support … Cataclysm PvP is going to be fun as hell.

Totem Talk: Shields, totems and buffs, oh my!
by Kris on Aug.22, 2010, under PvP, PvP Bible, WarcraftFormula, WoW, WotLK Secrets, wotlk guide
Welcome to another article by elemental shaman specialist WoW.com/bloggers/Matt-Sampson/”>Matt Sampson, otherwise known as Binkenstein. By day, he’s a geek; by night, he’s also a geek, but with spreadsheets. He’s also the shaman behind TotemSpot and is currently leveling a mage alt … sshh, don’t tell anyone!
Welcome to another post on Cataclysm beta information for the best spec of all: elemental. There have been one or two changes in the latest patch, along with things being fixed (Unleash Elements, for example). This means we can start doing some testing, play with the mechanics and get a better feel for how elemental is looking. First, patch notes!
- Magma Totem now costs 18% of base mana, down from 27%.
- Lava Burst damage has been increased by 25%.
Restoration
- Totem of Tranquil Mind *New* – Summons a Totem of Tranquil Mind with 5 health at the feet of the caster for 5 min, causing party or raid members within 30 yards to lose 0% less casting or channeling time when damaged. (Value NYI, Concentration Aura)
As you can see, the patch notes are fairly small and are mostly balancing tweaks. The additional 25 percent damage on Lava Burst only applies to the base damage, so instead of dealing 1,441 damage (on average) it now hits for 1,801. This extra damage will be multiplied by talents as well, so that becomes 460 extra damage before considering the critical strike multiplier, which brings it up to 1,022. In other words, that 25 percent base damage increase turns out to be a 6.4 percent increase in overall damage, assuming an average critical of 16,000 before the change.
