Horde Unlocks Fortune Reward; Video Interview With Jesse McCree

Well that was a close race! The Horde has unlocked its first content on the Azeroth’s Fortune website. It’s a video interview with Jesse McCree — Lead Level Designer for World of Warcraft — who spent a lot of time working on the Goblin and Worgen starting areas.

Jesse talks about the challenges of fitting two already-existing races in Warcraft lore into a game now six years old. He also touches on things different in the Goblin and Worgen areas compared to other races. They will utilize a lot of terrain phasing, and Blizzard feels that most who play the races will already be experienced players, meaning that they do a lot less hand-holding.

WoW Insider is available on your Amazon Kindle

WoW Insider is available on your Amazon KindleWoW.joystiq.com/media/2010/09/580kindle1-1285791001.jpg” />
So, I bought an Amazon Kindle recently, and it’s just the coolest thing. All the books I could ever read, available to me any time, on a crisp, easy-to-read display that doesn’t hurt my eyes. “But I don’t care about books,” you say. “I care about blogs! Specifically, blogs about WoW that are named WoW Insider!”

Well, you’re in luck. WoW Insider is available on the Kindle right this very moment, and you can get it one of two ways. The first is to use the experimental browser, accessible from the main Kindle menu under “Experimental”; enter our URL or mobile address (i.WoW.joystiq.com). The browser is surprisingly nice for being on an e-reader device, and especially for being in black and white.

The second way is admittedly cooler. You can WoW-Insider/dp/B001LF3E60/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&m=AG56TWVU5XWC2&s=digital-text&qid=1285793479&sr=1-1″>subscribe to WoW Insider from the Blogs section of the Kindle Store for a small fee, and as long as you have a wireless connection, your Kindle will automatically update your archive of WoW Insider articles as often as we post new articles. Most formatting is intact in the Kindle blog format — the only thing missing is pictures.

Reading the latest WoW.joystiq.com/category/know-your-lore/”>Know Your Lore like it was a book? Now that’s technology I can get behind.

Know Your Lore: Orgrim Doomhammer, part 2

by Kris on Oct.01, 2010, under PvP, PvP Bible, WarcraftFormula, WoW, WotLK Secrets, wotlk guide

Know Your Lore: Orgrim Doomhammer, part 2WoW.joystiq.com/media/2010/09/doomhammerventriloquist.jpg” />

The World of Warcraft is an expansive universe. You’re playing the game, you’re fighting the bosses, you know the how — but do you know the why? Each week, WoW.joystiq.com/bloggers/matthew-rossi/”>Matthew Rossi and WoW.joystiq.com/bloggers/anne-stickney/”>Anne Stickney make sure you WoW.joystiq.com/category/know-your-lore/”>Know Your Lore by covering the history of the story behind World of Warcraft.

See last week’s WoW.joystiq.com/2010/09/22/know-your-lore-orgrim-doomhammer-part-1/”>Know Your Lore: Orgrim Doomhammer, part 1.

When talking about the WoW.joystiq.com/2010/09/22/know-your-lore-orgrim-doomhammer-part-1/”>second Warchief of the Horde, a few salient facts must always be discussed.

Orgrim Doomhammer did not drink the demon blood. Frankly, as purely subjective and biased as it may be, I don’t find the idea that, “Oh, well, they were addicted to the demon blood,” is anything like an excuse for what the Horde did in the First and Second Wars. Objectively, the Horde burst through the Dark Portal, murdered everyone in their way (people who had never done anything to them), sacked whole cities, and in general were akin to a plague of gigantic green locusts. It’s not forgivable simply because they willingly choose to slurp down on the ichor of Mannoroth first. Nor is Doomhammer any more laudable for having engaged in those selfsame actions without having drunk. Doomhammer never made even a token effort to parley with the humans. He saw them as vermin to be exterminated so that his people could have their fertile lands for their own, and had the Horde won the war Doomhammer waged across the Eastern Kingdoms, there is no doubt that he would have gleefully put the entire human race and its allies to the sword — and entirely without the “curse” to in any way explain his actions.

Whatever else he may have been — quick to anger, reluctant to challenge his people’s direction as his old friend Durotan did, overly eager to display his own prowess (even if doing so meant becoming as battle-hungry as any blood-drinker) — Doomhammer proved himself to be a superbly able tactician and relentless force both on the battlefield and off it. It must be said that the Horde came within a few hours of totally destroying Lordaeron as it had Stormwind. Pretty much every Forsaken active today would have lost someone to the orcish Horde of the time, and it was only the betrayal of and defection of Gul’dan that ultimately ended the Horde’s chance for final victory.

WoW Rookie: What is Cataclysm?

by Kris on Oct.01, 2010, under PvP, PvP Bible, WarcraftFormula, WoW, WotLK Secrets, wotlk guide

 WoW Rookie: What is Cataclysm?WoW.joystiq.com/media/2010/09/deathwingface.jpg” alt=”" />

Sites like WoW.joystiq.com”>WoW Insider have been absolutely buzzing with information about the new expansion to the World of Warcraft. While we bloggers, journalists and fans are so accustomed to hearing about the upcoming Cataclysm that we don’t think twice about it, a brand new player probably has no clue what the heck is going on. So with that being said, let’s take a week and catch up our rookie brother and sisters by answering, “What exactly is Cataclysm?”

First things first. Cataclysm is the third expansion to World of Warcraft. The first two expansions were WoW.joystiq.com/photos/burning-crusade/”>The Burning Crusade and WoW.joystiq.com/categories/wrath-of-the-lich-king”>Wrath of the Lich King. So far, we’ve seen a new expansion about every two years. In between each expansion, we get tons of free content like new dungeons, raids and world events. But it’s really the named expansions that rewrite the game’s genre and endgame for the player base.

We don’t know the release date of Cataclysm yet. However, it’s safe to assume it’s at least a month away as of the time of this writing. There will be several prologue events before the release, however, that will serve as the WoW.joystiq.com/2010/09/22/pre-cataclysm-world-events-live-on-the-ptr/”>lore and story transition between Wrath and Cataclysm. There is a WoW.joystiq.com/2010/08/17/cataclysm-collectors-edition-contents-announced/”>Collector’s Edition of Cataclysm that includes some neat toys associated with it, so if you want that boxed set, you’d better pre-order now.

Cataclysm Beta: Last call for Quel’thalas

Cataclysm Beta: Last call for QuelthalasWoW.joystiq.com/media/2010/09/quelthalaslastcall.jpg” alt=”" />

One of the better kept secrets of vanilla WoW is a zone called WoWwiki.com/Quel%27Thalas”>Quel’thalas. (Be careful not to confuse this with the zone WoWwiki.com/Isle_of_Quel%27Danas”>Isle of Quel’danas.) If you’re not a lore buff, Quel’thalas is the kingdom of the WoWwiki.com/High_elf”>Quel’dorei, or blood elves, as they’re now known. (Check out WoW.joystiq.com/2010/05/04/know-your-lore-elven-evolution/”>Elven Evolution and WoW.joystiq.com/2010/04/03/know-your-lore-current-horde-politics-the-blood-elves/”>Current Horde Politics: the Blood Elves for the full story.) The blood elf zones we know in WoW as WoWwiki.com/Silvermoon_City”>Silvermoon City, WoWwiki.com/Eversong_Woods”>Eversong Woods and WoWwiki.com/Ghostlands”>Ghostlands are all considered part of Quel’thalas — but those are not the zones I’m talking about today.

The Quel’thalas I’m referring to is a tiny peninsula northeast of WoWwiki.com/Tirisfal_Glades”>Tirisfal Glades. It isn’t accessible by road or flight path, only water, and when you arrive you’ll be greeted by … nothing. There aren’t any NPCs, enterable buildings or quest legs — just an empty, unexplained mystery. Take a look.

Know Your Lore: The Council of Tirisfal and the last Guardian

Know Your Lore: The Council of Tirisfal and the last GuardianWoW.joystiq.com/media/2010/09/medivhprophet580.jpg” />

He was the last Guardian and one of the most influential people in Azeroth — but he never meant to be either one. Of all of the myriad and varied heroes in World of Warcraft, there is one man who is responsible for the majority of the events we see in Azeroth today. This man was solely responsible for the presence of orcs, responsible for the Horde, responsible for the ever-evolving conflict between Horde and Alliance. He was responsible for the original destruction of Stormwind, for the death of WoW.joystiq.com/2008/01/17/know-your-lore-anduin-lothar/”>Anduin Lothar, WoW.joystiq.com/2008/04/04/know-your-lore-the-wrynn-dynasty/”>King Llane Wrynn and many other heroes whose exploits didn’t make it into the annals of history. He was responsible, indirectly, for the corruption of WoW.joystiq.com/2007/02/23/know-your-lore-arthas/”>Arthas and the subsequent death of King Menethil, the razing of Stratholme and the rise of the Scourge. He arguably has more blood on his hands than any other being in Azeroth.

And yet he was also responsible for the first tenuous threads of peace stretched between Alliance and Horde. He was responsible for the rise of some of Azeroth’s greatest heroes — he was the man that made Varian Wrynn who he is today, he was the man who turned Thrall from an orc with dreams of peace for his people into a leader of action. He was responsible for saving Azeroth from being razed and torn asunder by the Burning Legion. He was a man of many talents, and a man of many regrets. His name is WoWhead.com/npc=15608″>Medivh.

Totem Talk: Restoration glyphs

Want to be a sultan of swing healing? A champion of Chain Heal? WoW.com/category/totem-talk/”>Totem Talk: Restoration will show you how, brought to you by Joe Perez, otherwise known as Lodur from World of Matticus and the For The Lore podcast

.

Last week, we went over some blue posts about healing and restoration shaman, as well as a small discussion of the difference in WoW.com/2010/08/31/totem-talk-questions-blue-quotes-and-healing-waves/”>Healing Waves. We also had news of a new beta build last week, and with that build came the news of brand new glyphs for many or the classes like WoW.com/2010/09/03/cataclysm-beta-new-glyphs-for-rogues-and-shaman/#continued”>rogues and shaman, as well as the new glyph system.

Some of the glyphs we use regularly have been updated, as well as some people may not have really given much thought to using. There has even been a return of some that were scrapped in the Wrath of the Lich King beta phases prior to its release. Some of these may offer game-changing, play-altering effects to our mechanics, while others just add a fun flavor to our classes. So what can we look forward to with restoration shaman glyphs in Cataclysm? That is exactly what I would like to talk about this week.

WoW Moviewatch: Sons of Grim Batol

by Kris on Sep.09, 2010, under PvP, PvP Bible, WarcraftFormula, WoW, WotLK Secrets, wotlk guide

SPOILER WARNING: This video has spoilers about Cataclysm. This review has spoilers about the video. This spoiler warning has spoilers about both.

WoW.com/tag/melvenor”>Melvenor is pretty well-known to the fans who love “big book” lore. He creates movies intrinsically tied to the lore of World of Warcraft, putting his own artistic vision and deep effort into the videos. Sons of Grim Batol is the first chapter in his Faces of Cataclysm series, which sets up a pretty exciting followup for later episodes.

My favorite bit came when the dwarves, confronted with the unconquerable might of a lone, shirtless troll, drolly shoot him down. I know this kind of deadpan slapstick isn’t exactly bleeding-edge humor, but it still tickles my funny bone.

I love Melvenor’s stuff, so here’s hoping for a relatively swift second chapter to the Faces of Cataclysm series.
