Breakfast Topic: What will you miss most from the Wrath era?WoW.joystiq.com/media/2010/09/zachtlahtsiretsolution1.jpg” />

This Breakfast Topic has been brought to you by WoW.joystiq.com/2010/02/03/the-new-WoW-com-guest-blogger-program/”>Seed, the Aol guest writer program that WoW.joystiq.com/tag/write-for-WoW-insider”>brings your words to WoW Insider’s pages.

I have to admit (although somewhat shamefacedly) that the only raid instance I saw before Wrath launched was Karazhan. Even worse, I was only watching my roommate running around this fantastic place, slaying beasts and praying (yes, he was actually praying) for the purples to come his way. At the time, I had abandoned my first toon, a level 23 orc warrior, and I had made amazing strides leveling my holy paladin to the grand status of level 61 before taking a break. As a result, I never raided when there were massive 40-man raids or when raiding was “hard,” as those BC/vanilla veterans will say, so I can’t say that I’ll miss some of those raids that might disappear as Cataclysm reshapes the world as we know it. As for the zones getting hit hardest by Cataclysm, I can truthfully say I’m quite fond of bidding most of them farewell. Will anyone other than die-hard Chuck Norris fans really miss The Barrens?

So what is it about WoW that I will miss when the game changes for Cataclysm? It’s the fast-paced content, the extreme value of a global cooldown. Many players stress at the thought of tanks getting killed in two to three hits from a raid boss, while I thrive on the risk. During our initial attempts at Festergut, the challenge of being able to time a ridiculously strong Holy Light in between swings from the abomination to keep the tanks alive was exhilarating. As a ret paladin in PVP, I love being jumped by a rogue in a battleground. If he couldn’t kill me during his initial stun, I’d probably burst him down to nothing during mine. With the dramatically increase health pools and lower comparative healing/damage planned for Cataclysm, there won’t be as many hair-trigger reactions needed to stay alive. I’m pretty sure I’m going to miss the current model, in which a single GCD no longer means life or death for someone in my raid.

When Cataclysm hits, most players will miss a specific zone or instance. What do you think you’ll miss? A particular ability or general function? Or are you among those who think change is good, that paladins shouldn’t have bubble/hearth and it’s OK if mages can bloodlust?

Breakfast Topic: What would you tell your level 1 self?

Breakfast Topic: What would you tell your level 1 self?WoW.joystiq.com/media/2010/09/backtothefuture1.jpg” alt=”" />

We were all once level 1 and new to WoW. Some of us migrated from a different MMO, while for others, WoW was their first MMO. Some of us started during vanilla WoW, some came in during The Burning Crusade and some started after Wrath went live. No matter when you first started WoW, you were a level 1 with no money or gear — and if this was your first time playing an MMO, you more than likely had no idea what to do.

Fast-forward to level 80 and look at your character now. Are you raiding Icecrown on heroic? Maybe you’re one of the gladiators in your battlegroup. How about a Seeker/Loremaster? Did you picture yourself doing the things you’re doing today? Did you have a goal from Day One? I myself started with a gnome rogue. The thought of something so small popping out of the shadows was both funny and awesome. I rolled a hunter a week later, and the race to 70 was on. I hardly knew anything about the game at the time. I just knew that I wanted to hit 70 because that is what all the cool players were doing.

In Dragonblight, there is a quest where you meet the WoWhead.com/npc=27899″>Future You at the Bronze Dragonshrine. The Future You helps you battle the WoWwiki.com/Infinite_dragonflight”>Infinite Dragonflight and makes a few comments about your gear and how you fight during the encounter. Would you ask the Future You for any tips on your adventure to 80? What advice would you give yourself? I would tell myself that he doesn’t know it yet, but one day he will be a great seeker, a hunter who not only loves his ale but his pets. Most importantly, I would tell him he will be a hero of the Alliance one day and to train hard, for he will face the Lich King.

What if at level 1 you met the future version of yourself? What if you could visit yourself in the past? What would you tell the level 1 you, or what would the level 1 you ask?

Breakfast Topic: What won’t you miss about Wrath?

Breakfast Topic: What wont you miss about Wrath?WoW.joystiq.com/media/2010/09/ah070709additionalinstances1.jpg” />

It’s a truth we all must face: Wrath of the Lich King is coming to a close. Whether you loved it, hated it or something in between, it is time to look forward to the new expansion. With the excitement of a whole new cataclysmic event on the horizon, one can’t help but look back on the recent past. There were some glorious moments in Wrath: the WoWwiki.com/Wrathgate”>Wrathgate quest line leading up to the Battle for the Undercity, epic battles in WoW.joystiq.com/tag/wintergrasp”>Wintergrasp, and equally epic encounters like WoWwiki.com/Algalon”>Algalon in Ulduar and the Lich King in Icecrown Citadel all come to mind.

Yet with greatness come some faults. Wrath was no exception. About three months after the expansion’s release with the start of the holiday WoW.joystiq.com/tag/love-is-in-the-air”>Love is in the Air, a bug caused the message The Ice Stone has melted! to be spammed in everyone’s chat logs. And let us not forget the fiasco that was Additional instances cannot be launched, please try again later that prevented thousands of players from entering dungeons until servers were upgraded with new hardware months after it started popping up.

There was a lot of fun to be had in Wrath of the Lich King. There was a lot to feel nostalgic about. However, Wrath was far from perfect. What won’t you miss about this expansion?

Breakfast Topic: Do you own any WoW peripherals?

Breakfast Topic: Do you own any WoW peripherals?WoW.joystiq.com/media/2010/09/nagagamingmouse1.jpg” alt=”" />

One of my friends struck it rich at a really young age. He grew up fairly poor and suddenly came into a large amount of money, and he now spends it on infinite amounts of frivolous items. He actually owns a Slap Chop, George Foreman Grill and some WoW.com/”>ShamWoWs. He also buys many of the WoW peripherals. Not only did he buy the WoW.joystiq.com/tag/celestial-steed”>sparkle pony and about every pet that WoW has put out, he also buys the actual gaming items. He has the WoW.joystiq.com/2010/07/05/world-of-warcraft-tap-chat-now-available/”>Tap Chat, the wireless WoW headset, even the Wrath keyboard and Blizzard MMO gaming mouse.

Personally, the only peripheral I’ve bought from Blizzard is an authenticator, which netted me the cute little WoWhead.com/item=49646″>core hound pet. However, the sense of security that my seven 80s won’t be cleaned out while my account is used to spam trade for some gold selling site is the real reason I picked it up. I have a Logitech mouse and headset — nothing super fancy, but they work just fine for me, and I paid less than one piece’s worth of the Blizzard direct WoW paraphernalia. My girlfriend was going to buy me the WoW headset for my birthday, but I told her to save her money and get me a game card, as opposed to dropping over $100 on a headset. I told her if I were going to spend that kind of money on something for my computer, it would be to update pieces of the hardware, like a better graphics card or a new processor.

In the end, the decision whether or not to buy something comes down to the consumer, so I leave it to you, the WoW gaming public: Do you own any of the gaming peripherals for WoW? If so, do they actually help make you a better player? If you feel they actually aid your gaming experience, can you provide some examples or testimonials as to why?

Breakfast Topic: Do you prefer to be the off tank?

Breakfast Topic: Do you prefer to be the off tank?WoW.joystiq.com/media/2010/09/alldpslsp-1284746866.jpg” />

This Breakfast Topic has been brought to you by WoW.joystiq.com/2010/02/03/the-new-WoW-com-guest-blogger-program/”>Seed, the Aol guest writer program that WoW.joystiq.com/tag/write-for-WoW-insider”>brings your words to our pages.

Most tanks (and aspiring tanks) want to be the main tank of a raid. It is upon this prestigious player’s shoulders that the success or failure of the raid is often considered to rest.

Screw that.

First of all, we know that stereotype is untrue. Healers and DPS both play critical roles in raid success, even though they are sometimes forced to argue for their significance. But I don’t often hear praise for the off tanks. While the healers heal, the DPS damages and the main tank tanks, these “wannabe main tanks” play critical roles in most every fight. Whether they have to pick up adds or share the burden of boss tanking with the main tank, these intrepid heroes have to work just as hard to keep the raid alive.

I first tasted off-tanking back in Naxxramas (10-man) when I stepped up to the task of being one of the rear tanks on my elemental shaman during the Four Horsemen fight. Here, I received my first taste of the special joy of adapting my skill set to new situations for every fight. I pined to be the one who would kite the zombies on Gluth, but my shaman lacked the capability, and one of our mages shouldered the responsibility. You can rest assured, however, that I was always back there to assist by laying down my Stoneclaw Totem.

My guild fell apart for a while after Ulduar was released, and I was too poor for more WoW. Once I wasn’t poor anymore, I leveled a feral druid, and we all got back together just recently and started raiding Icecrown. Now I’m the off tank, and I’m loving it. Being an off tank lets me flex and show how creative and adaptable I am.

Do any of you tanking types out there prefer the off-tank role?

Breakfast Topic: Have you visited any old friends lately?WoW.joystiq.com/media/2010/09/vanshatt.jpg” alt=”" />

This Breakfast Topic has been brought to you by WoW.joystiq.com/2010/02/03/the-new-WoW-com-guest-blogger-program/”>Seed, the Aol guest writer program that WoW.joystiq.com/tag/write-for-WoW-dot-com”>brings your words to our pages.

It’s September, and we’re still waiting on WoWwiki.com/Deathwing”>Deathwing to give Azeroth a makeover (especially Desolace — I don’t know anyone who has ever had anything good to say about that zone). While Deathwing has said many times he’s going to make an appearance in 2010, he has yet to say when he’s coming. So for now, we’re left hanging out with Arthas. I’ve spent more than enough time with Arthas. All he ever talks about is how cold his frozen throne is, how nobody comes to visit and when they do they bring that jerk Tirion along.

One day, I finally got tired of hanging around Arthas and decided to visit some old friends. I went to say hi to WoWhead.com/npc=14834″>Hakkar, but he was still bitter that I took his heart, so I said my goodbyes and left. After visiting Hakkar, I went to the Molten Core; that was a very bad idea. Apparently, the WoWhead.com/npc=11671″>Core Hounds think dwarves are a snack no matter what level they are.

After running back to my body and forcing my turtle to distract the corehounds so I could get away, I decided to visit my good friends in Shattrath. That was also a bad idea. I waved at WoWhead.com/npc=18481″>A’dal, and as I turned to walk away, he invaded my mind and started complaining about WoWhead.com/npc=19622″>Kael’thas. I guess people are going back to kill Kael just for laughs, so he in turns appears in Shattrath to taunt A’dal. He was also complaining about how the new adventurers refuse to help him or anyone else in the city.

You know what? Forget it. I’m done being nice. I’m not going to visit anyone else. Let me know when Deathwing comes. I’ll be at the Ironforge inn with my cat. At least she doesn’t hold a grudge when I leave her at the stable master …

What about you? What old friends have you called on recently, in the slow weeks before Cataclysm?

In our WoW.joystiq.com/2010/09/07/guest-post-is-your-computer-ready-for-cataclysm/”>first post, we covered upgrading your current system; last week, we discussed WoW.joystiq.com/2010/09/13/guest-post-how-to-assemble-a-hot-gaming-rig-for-cataclysm/”>how to assemble a hot gaming rig. Today, we’ll look at building a high-end system that will last.

Today, I will cover building a high-end system for under $2,000 that will last you many expansions into the future. In this article, I will be listing specific parts as opposed to making general suggestions. Computer geek opinions vary drastically; this is just my two cents.

When you’re considering a rig that will last you for years to come, you need to consider key components including the case, the power supply, the motherboard, a processor, heatsinks, hard drives the video card and more.

As a prot paladin, I’ve learned my place in the world (of Warcraft). True, that place is usually face-deep in the crotch of some monster, but that’s beside the point. When I’m tanking, I know I’m here to do one thing and one thing only: to piss off bad guys so they’ll leave you alone. Strapping on my shield and a mace keeps me in a Zen-like comfort zone where everything seems to just come naturally.

Like many others, though, I’ve found myself looking for more to do as Cataclysm lurches ever closer. After all, there are only so many things to get beaten by each week. This has left me joining a growing percentage of players in a less-than-exclusive club: “Hi, I’m Brian, and I’m an altoholic.”

Most classes I’ve tried have felt fairly natural. I’ve leveled my DK and priest with no problems and have really been enjoying the early levels of both my mage and warlock (which, as you’d imagine, leaves me with quite an internal struggle). There’s one class, however, that has managed to bewilder me at every turn. A class that, for whatever reason, seems so counterintuitive to me that It’s taken me over a year and a half to hit level 27. My friends, I am — cue dramatic music — the worst hunter in the world.

Guest Post: Is your computer ready for Cataclysm?

The Lich King is dead, your GearScore is 6,000+, and you have enough alts to run your own 25-man ICC. You cannot wait for the upcoming Cataclysm expansion, but along with the new instances, gear and level cap, there are also significantly increased graphics to consider. You may be ready for Cataclysm — but is your computer?

While we have yet to hear official system requirements from Blizzard, we do know from the Cataclysm FAQ thatthere will be incremental tweaks and updates to the graphics engine in this expansion. For example, we’ve made improvements to the way that water is rendered. We’ll announce the exact system requirements closer to the expansion’s release.”

This is the first part of a three-part series on getting your computer up to speed for Cataclysm. Today, we will cover how to cheaply upgrade your current system. Part 2 will look at how to build a cost-effective, brand new system that will still run WoW at full settings. Finally, part 3 will focus on building a future-proof monster computer capable of soloing the Blood Queen herself!

Breakfast Topic: Are you dodging the Cataclysm beta?

Breakfast Topic: Are you dodging the Cataclysm beta?WoW.com/media/2010/05/goblintrio.jpg” alt=”" />

This Breakfast Topic has been brought to you by WoW.com/2010/02/03/the-new-WoW-com-guest-blogger-program/”>Seed, the Aol guest writer program that WoW.com/tag/write-for-WoW-dot-com”>brings your words to WoW.com.

I could have taken part in the Cataclysm beta, but I chose not too. Here are my Top 10 reasons why I decided to wait to play Cataclysm until it is released some time later this year:

  1. I only have so much time — might as well put it toward making my toons stronger.
  2. I’ll let other people work the kinks out.
  3. I get bored enough repeating quests as it is. Why do the quests when they don’t really count?
  4. I don’t want to get accustomed to playing a level 85 mage, only to have to go back to my level 80 mage.
  5. Why level (or for that matter, play) with a character you can’t bring into the “real” non-beta world? I’m not that ambitious.
  6. I’ve done the beta before: fallen in love (well, strong “like”) with certain spells or abilities, only to have them taken away. (Mirror Image so rocked when it first appeared in the Wrath beta …) I don’t want to experience that pain again.
  7. Most of my guildmates won’t be there. I like having my guild around.
  8. I actually don’t think I’m a skilled enough raider to be any help with my feedback. I really need to do a boss encounter four or five times before I start to get it down well.
  9. If I am going to risk wife aggro, I want to risk it for something that counts.
  10. I’m not a fan of spoilers. I’d rather experience it all when it goes live.

Are you playing in the Cataclysm beta? Why or why not? Would you, if you had the chance?
