Cataclysm Beta: New videos of druid, rogue and warlock tier 11 armor

Blizzard puts an immense amount of time and thought into every piece of tier gear (at least, you’d hope it does). For those of us who raid (even casually), it’s the armor set we’ll see our characters in the most. You get a blue drop out of a heroic, and you might replace it in a few weeks. You get a piece of tier gear, and … well, the only thing that’s prying that out of your hands is an even better piece of tier gear.
That said, our datamining friends over at MMO-Champion have released some terrific finds today — the tier 11 sets for druids, rogues and warlocks that so many of you will be wearing just a few months after the Cataclysm release. The druid set, which seems to turn you into some manner of electrified bird-man, is absolutely gorgeous. Warlocks get a nice, evil-looking set that comes complete with skewed horns. As for rogues … well, somewhere out there, there’s a rogue who roleplays as an Arabian ghost — and man, is he happy today!
Though the full warrior set is not yet in the Cataclysm beta files, MMO Champion did dig up the warrior tier 11 helm, so the WoW.joystiq.com/bloggers/matthew-rossi/”>Matt Rossi posse gets a sneak peek at its gear as an added bonus. Call for Submissions: Cataclysm zone reviews

This week’s guest post assignment is for the Cataclysm beta testers out there. Our apologies to those of you not in the beta; we’ll have a fun assignment that will include everyone next week.

Flexible raid locks in patch 4.0.1

In WoW.joystiq.com/tag/patch-4.0.1/”>patch 4.0.1, Blizzard will roll out a new “flexible raid lock” system in Icecrown Citadel and The Ruby Sanctum. This system has a few major changes in it, outlined below:
- You are no longer locked to the raid upon zoning in, but to a specific boss kill.
- You are no longer locked to a specific raid size or group.
- Heroics have greater restrictions placed on them.
- All Wrath raids will use this system once Cataclysm releases.
- All Cataclysm raids will use this system.
- This only applies to raids and not to normal or heroic dungeons.

Cataclysm Beta: Select guild raid achievement requirements reduced

I admit it. I’m an achievement-holic. I’ll repeat the WoWhead.com/achievement=944″>most idiotic, mind-numbing task for hours on end just to earn a handful of achievement points. It doesn’t matter that I can’t do anything with those points. I want them. I need them. And I know I’m not alone in my obsession — some people play World of Warcraft just for the achievements. (You know who you are.)
Once Cataclysm launches, WoW.joystiq.com/2010/08/31/cataclysm-beta-guild-achievements/”>there will be a whole new set of achievements just for guilds, only compounding my poor, crippling obsession. A metric ton of them are for completing old instances and raids as a guild, and grabbing those points requires 80 percent guild participation. Under the guidelines laid out earlier in September, that meant you’d need to take along at least 20 guildies to conquer Serpentshrine Cavern (a BC 25-man), even if you could easily complete it with fewer.
Well, for those of us who are obsessed with collecting achievement points, there’s good news — Blizzard just cut the required participation rate for all the old school Burning Crusade raids. On the official forums, blue poster Mumper confirmed that they’re treating all old 25-man raids as 10-mans — instead of needing 20 guildies to take on Lady Vashj and Kil’jaeden, you will now only need 8.

Launcher update today causing problems, how to fix

An update to the Blizzard launcher and associated tools this afternoon has been causing problems for folks running various versions of Windows. The bug has a chance of occurring when you get stuck at a “Waiting for files to close…” dialog box when updating. Blizzard support staff was quick to announce a fix, which is pretty easy to do.
To solve this, go into the task manager (you can get to that by right-clicking on the bottom taskbar on your screen and selecting “Start Task Manager,” or by pressing the control, shift and escape keys all at once) and end any and all of the following processes in the “Processes” tab:
After you make sure none of the above processes are running, you’ll be able to move forward with the update and get WoW working again.

Cataclysm Beta: Warrior changes in build 12984

Arms
- Mortal Strike now has a 4.5-sec. cooldown, down from 5 sec.
- Blood Frenzy no longer improves your melee attack speed, gives your auto attacks a 5/10% chance to generate 20 additional rage instead.
- Mastery: Strikes of Opportunity additional melee attacks now deals 75% normal damage, up from 50%.
The changes here are interesting. Looking at them, I find myself wondering if they’re intended to make arms more responsive to melee attack speed increases and haste on gear. With slightly fasted MS and Blood Frenzy no longer providing the attack speed boost (but some much needed rage), haste won’t be so terrible. Meanwhile, the arms mastery got the buff we all figured it needed to even remotely be viable. Fury and protection changes and discussion behind the break.

Some of the most interesting, informative posts at WoW.com start out as rollicking debates in Pandora’s Box of Geekery and Chaos (aka the WoW.com staff chat room). A screenshot of the transcript on any given day would show a couple of links to pending articles ready for editorial review, a .jpg of something completely off-topic (usually veering toward the truly bizarre), and clips from the current crop of post comments and Twitter stream, all vying for attention amidst a lengthy, heated argument over game lore or some new beta feature — and (in regards to the latter debate) capped off with an exhortation from Editor-in-Chief WoW.com/bloggers/dan-ohalloran/”>Dan O’Halloran (almost certainly in LOLcat form): “Who’s writing this up?”

World of Warcraft puts players on a relatively fixed path in terms of loyalties. Sure, there are some very deliberate exceptions to this — notably the WoWwiki.com/Aldor”>Aldor/WoWwiki.com/Scryer”>Scryer rivalry of The Burning Crusade and the WoWwiki.com/Oracles”>Oracles/WoWwiki.com/Frenzyheart”>Frenzyheart feud in Wrath — but in general, wherever a conflict arises in the game, the decision as to what side you’re going to take is made for you. The rogue trainer in Northshire might tease you with the idea that joining the WoWwiki.com/Defias”>Defias is a potential option for you, but in reality, that can never happen.
WoW is certainly not lacking for “evil” factions one could potentially sympathize with. The aforementioned Defias, whose whole issue stems basically from WoW.com/2008/05/22/know-your-lore-the-defias-brotherhood/”>getting screwed over by Onyxia’s meddling, stand out as one such faction. Illidan Stormrage WoW.com/2008/01/11/is-illidan-bad-or-simply-misunderstood/”>has long sparked controversy as to whether he was really on the side of evil, although that might be a result of WoWwiki.com/Illidan_Stormrage”>his almost hopelessly confused lore. I have read suggestions that WoWwiki.com/Malygos”>Malygos has a large (if misguided) sympathetic following. And even now, I see some already looking to figure out how to take the side of Big Bad Yet to Come, WoWwiki.com/Deathwing”>Deathwing himself.
Does this bother you? Do you wish sometimes that you could break the rules and side with a faction or villain you’re not supposed to? What hostile faction or enemy character, if any, would you side with, given the opportunity to do so?
