GDC 2011 dropped quite a few surprises on us, a major one being the quality of Fight Night Champion. It’s easily the best looking boxing game in the App Store, and has great gesture-based controls.

From the fighter selection — of which there are more than twenty to choose, active and legends alike — to the actual match itself, this game is a high quality product and vaults EA Mobile to the top as one of the premiere mobile gaming developers.

The controls are probably the best feature of this game, and they fully take advantage of a touch device. Motion across the screen to the right and you’ll swing with one arm, motion to the left and you’ll swing with another. The angle you swipe with your finger will also dictate where on the body you hit: angle down for a body blow, up for a swing at the head.

Uppercuts and signature swings exist as well. A slightly angled upper motion will cause you to throw an uppercut, while holding your finger down and moving in a curved upward motion will trigger your fighter’s signature swing.Movement around the ring feels great as well. Simply tilt your device and your boxer will move about the ring in that direction.

Fight Night Champion is available already in the iTunes App Store, and priced at $4.99, it’s a premium-quality mobile game you don’t want to pass up — especially if you’re a fan of sports games.

We were recently given the opportunity to head out to Baltimore to check out Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, a new game created by 38 Studios and Big Huge Games and published by EA.

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning stays true to its RPG element, containing a rich in-depth storyline, plenty of interesting characters and a large open world full of creatures and unique enemies. One of the most notable features is the ability to choose how your character will develop with the Destiny System. This extensive system gives you the capability to choose any path or mix up your destiny, allowing you to play as a mage, magical warrior, jack of all trades or any sort of class that your heart desires.

The combat system features attacks that are very agile and fast-paced. You are allowed to carry up to two weapons at once and switch between them at any moment while fighting, giving you the chance to try out many gripping and unusual combos. Combos are easy to utilize, taking very little practice to pick up and making it easier for players to enjoy the game without having to memorize button patterns. Another combat component is the Fate Shift Kill, which is a dynamic and powerful attack that cannot not be interrupted once started and alternates from weapon to weapon.

Enemies have an intimidating AI system that allows them to unite against you. They also may gain formidable attacks based on the number of enemies present or if more vigorous enemies are nearby. All enemies have a certain range of levels based on what area they are in and will adjust with you depending on your own level. The game also features a soft lock system, which supports the ability to target enemies but still move around freely.

The game also features many NPCs and a quest system, although little details are known about these mechanics at this time.

38 Studios and EA have announced that the release date of Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning has been pushed back to 2012 from 2011. The game is planned to be released on Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and PC and will feature an achievement system.
